Biofuels are surrounded in controversy.
We buy our road transport in litres not in kWh? Do we care if we get more volume but less energy?
Of course we do.
If we fill up our cars with the same amount of fuel each week but are able to drive less distance each week would we be happy? Well this is what is happening as biofuel blends are increased in standard petrol and diesel fuels supplied in forecourts. Biodiesel gives us 10% less energy than regular diesel but biopetrol (ethanol) gives us 36% less energy than regular petrol. So it pays to AVOID biofuels, especially as most are still produced from food crops which hit the poorest and most vulnerable through increased food prices.
