This guide helps you organise a stakeholder event, or series of events, focused on environmental awareness, earth systems and sustainability in your workplace or community.

It lists simple, practical activities that help raise awareness, spark engagement and encourage meaningful action. Your audience can take part in talks, walks, challenges and hands-on events that connect sustainability topics with real outcomes.

Who is this for?

This guide supports organisers planning green, eco or sustainability-themed days and weeks across their organisations or communities. It is useful for sustainability teams, environmental coordinators, facilities and operations teams, university or school engagement groups, workplace culture or staff networks, and anyone running environmental or green engagement activities.

How to plan your Sustainability Week

Sustainability Week is a themed programme designed to inspire, educate and engage your organisation or campus community. Its purpose is to help people understand how everyday actions – at work, at home and in the community – shape environmental impact.

1. Choose your theme

Your theme sets the tone for the week. You can go broad or focus on a single topic:

  • Sustainability
  • Climate / carbon / climate action
  • Energy and renewables
  • Water
  • Waste & recycling
  • Biodiversity / earth
  • ESG / SDGs

You can also run a multi-theme week, where each day focuses on a different topic.

2. Name your week and choose a hashtag

A memorable name increases engagement. For example: Green Action Week, Climate Impact Week, Eco Earth Week or Sustainability Starts With Us.

#GoGreenTogether #CampusGoesGreen #ActForEarth #SustainabilityWeek

3. Decide your format

Choose the format that best fits your organisation – in-person, virtual, hybrid, or recorded sessions for global teams. Consider accessibility, remote workers and time zones.

4. Build your programme

A strong programme mixes formats to keep engagement high:

  • Guest speakers
  • Workshops
  • Panel discussions
  • Lunch & learn sessions
  • Competitions
  • Interactive activities
